Renovations are set to begin on the Carnegie Library as Apple and the Board of Directors for the Districts of Columbia, Events DC finalise terms. ย This follows rumorsย sparked last Septemeber, which now prove to be true.
Apple’s vision
Apple has been given a 19,000 square foot section of the building but the company is planning more than just a retail space. ย Apple will also use the location to host free concerts,ย art exhibits, and educational workshops. ย This is in line with Apple retail head Angela Ahrendt’s retail vision for the company.
Apple is set to work with Foster + Partners to redesign the interior of the 114-year-old building that is located across from Washingtonย Convention Center in Mount Vernon Square. ย It is thought to eventually show resemblance to Apple Opera in Paris and Apple Grand Central in New York.
The Historical Society will continue to operate the museum in the library but there will be some relocations. Reading rooms are set to be used for product demonstrations and the book collection will be relocated to allow for Apple’s new store.
The response
Apple has stated it strives to bring out the history of the building and will show respect by keeping branding to a minimum. ย It is not yet clear when the store will officially open, however, Mayor Muriel Bowser has expressed her excitement for Apple’s plans:
“The partnership between Events DC and Apple demonstrates an innovative approach to preserving the historic character of our world-renowned Carnegie Library while creating a cultural experience that welcomes residents from across the District of Columbia and visitors around the world,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “We look forward to the Carnegie Library re-opening its doors as a destination in DC’s Other Mall – our thriving retail”
