iOS 27 Public Beta is earning unusually positive early reactions for performance, particularly from people who felt their iPhones had become slower, warmer or less responsive under iOS 26.
The most enthusiastic responses are not necessarily coming from owners of the newest hardware. iPhone 13 users are reporting some of the most noticeable changes in animation smoothness, keyboard responsiveness and app opening times. Owners of iPhone 11 models are also seeing visible gains, although aging batteries can limit how much improvement reaches the screen.
Newer devices such as iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 17 and iPhone Air appear to provide the most stable experience, but the performance difference is less dramatic because those models were already fast under iOS 26.
The early favorite therefore depends on the measurement. The iPhone 13 family currently stands out for the largest perceived improvement, while iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 models receive stronger reviews for overall stability. The iPhone 15 Pro family sits between those groups, with impressive speed reports complicated by inconsistent heat and battery behavior.
iOS 27 Public Beta Has Official Speed Targets
The faster behavior is not limited to subjective impressions.
Apple says app launches can be up to 30% faster in iOS 27. Its testing used an iPhone 11 Pro Max running iOS 26.4.2 and prerelease iOS 27 after repeated cycles of device use.
That choice is significant. Apple did not demonstrate the app-launch claim only on its newest processor. It used a model introduced in 2019, suggesting that the operating-system work was intended to improve aging devices rather than simply take advantage of newer chips.
Apple also claims new photographs can appear in the Photos library up to 70% faster, based on testing with an iPhone 15 and a library containing 50,000 items. AirDrop transfers can be up to 80% faster under specific conditions tested with an iPhone 16 Plus.
The company attributes part of the change to improvements at the core of the system, including an optimized CPU scheduler. The scheduler determines how tasks are distributed across processor cores, when background activity receives resources and how quickly the system responds to foreground actions.
That work can improve responsiveness without increasing the maximum benchmark score of the processor. An app may feel faster because iOS recognizes the request sooner, assigns the correct cores more efficiently and reduces unnecessary work competing in the background.
Independent launch testing on iPhone 17 models has also found measurable improvements in Safari, Photos, Camera and third-party apps. The gains vary considerably by application, showing that the “up to” figures should not be expected during every routine.
iPhone 13 Receives the Strongest Speed Reactions
The iPhone 13 family is producing some of the most consistently enthusiastic public feedback.
Users describe faster keyboard response, fewer dropped frames, quicker app switching and smoother scrolling than they experienced under later versions of iOS 26. Some reactions compare the change with installing a fresh operating system on a newer phone.
The A15 Bionic processor remains powerful enough for ordinary iPhone work, but the iPhone 13 is old enough for software inefficiencies to become visible. That combination makes scheduling and animation improvements easier to notice.
The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max may benefit even more perceptually because their ProMotion displays can refresh at up to 120Hz. When the interface maintains its intended frame rate, scrolling and transitions appear substantially smoother than they do when inconsistent performance introduces brief stutters.
Standard iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini models retain 60Hz displays, but owners still report improvements in typing, opening applications and moving between Home Screen pages.
Battery condition remains a major variable. An iPhone 13 with a heavily degraded battery may reduce peak performance or deliver poor endurance regardless of operating-system efficiency.

A low maximum-capacity percentage does not mean iOS 27 provides no performance improvement. It means the battery may be unable to support the same sustained power delivery and daily runtime as it did when new.
iPhone 15 Pro Shows Major Gains and Mixed Heat Reports
The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are receiving some of the strongest comments about reduced stuttering and faster app launches.
Several users who experienced frequent heat under iOS 26 describe their devices as cooler and more responsive after installing iOS 27. Others continue to report warming, particularly after moving between beta builds or while the phone performs background work.
The divided feedback makes the iPhone 15 Pro difficult to rank as the definitive winner. Its best reports are among the most positive, but its experience appears less consistent than the feedback surrounding the iPhone 13 or newer iPhone 16 models.
The titanium iPhone 15 Pro generation has attracted heat complaints since its introduction, and temperature depends on more than the processor. Cellular signal strength, battery condition, charging, screen brightness, camera use and background indexing can all warm the enclosure.
A phone may also become temporarily hot after installing the public beta while Photos analyzes images, Spotlight rebuilds its index and applications update internal data.
Users should allow at least 24 to 48 hours before deciding whether the new system permanently improved or worsened thermal behavior.
The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are receiving generally favorable reviews for interface smoothness and keyboard behavior. Reports are not universal, with some owners continuing to experience heat or lag. The largest improvements appear on devices that previously struggled with animation consistency under iOS 26.
Newer iPhones Deliver the Safest Beta Experience
The iPhone 16 family, iPhone 17 lineup and iPhone Air appear to offer the most dependable performance in the first public beta.
Their newer processors, additional memory and stronger support for Apple Intelligence give iOS more room to operate without placing the hardware under continuous pressure. Owners frequently describe the beta as unexpectedly stable for a July release.
The perceived speed increase is usually smaller. A fast iPhone 17 Pro cannot create the same before-and-after impression as an iPhone 13 that previously stuttered while typing or switching apps.
The newer models also receive more of the headline iOS 27 features. Apple Intelligence is supported on every iPhone 16 and later, along with iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Older compatible devices receive the core performance, design and application improvements but not the complete AI package.
The iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 families provide the opposite experience. They may show a surprisingly visible improvement in app responsiveness, but their age increases the chance of battery degradation, limited free storage and heat caused by inefficient charging or weak cellular reception.
How to Test the Speed Improvement Fairly
Performance should not be judged immediately after the installation finishes.
Leave the iPhone connected to power and Wi-Fi for several hours so indexing, photo analysis and application updates can progress. Restart the phone once after that initial period and use it normally for at least one full day.
Before installing, record how long frequently used apps take to open and note whether the keyboard, Camera, Photos library or App Switcher regularly stutters. Repeat the same routines after the beta settles.
Free storage also affects behavior.

How to Install or Disable the Public Beta
Apple recommends using beta software on a secondary device rather than a business-critical or primary iPhone. A backup should be created before installation.
To enable the iOS 27 Public Beta:
Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates > iOS 27 Public Beta
Return to Software Update and install the available build. The Apple Account used on the iPhone must be enrolled in the Apple Beta Software Program.
To stop receiving future beta releases:
Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates > Off
Turning beta updates off does not immediately return the iPhone to iOS 26. It keeps the installed system and waits until a compatible public release becomes available.
The most revealing performance comparison may come from the iPhone 11 Pro Max, the same aging model Apple used for its 30% app-launch claim. On a device with a healthy battery and adequate free storage, iOS 27 can test whether seven-year-old hardware still has useful speed hidden behind software scheduling rather than a lack of processing power.
