Dark Matter season 2 will return to Apple TV on August 28, 2026, carrying the Dessen family into another unstable chapter after the apparent safety reached at the end of the first season.
Apple revealed the first full trailer during a Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, where the cast and creative team introduced a season built around the consequences of surviving the Box rather than simply escaping it.
The 10-episode season will begin with one episode on Friday, August 28. A new installment will follow every Friday through October 30, extending the story across more than two months instead of releasing the complete season at once.
Joel Edgerton returns as physicist Jason Dessen, with Jennifer Connelly again playing Daniela Dessen. Both actors also serve as executive producers on the series, which is based on the 2016 novel by author and showrunner Blake Crouch.
Dark Matter Season 2 Disrupts the Dessen Family Again
The first season followed Jason after he was abducted and placed inside an alternate version of his life. In that reality, he had become a celebrated scientist responsible for creating the Box, a machine capable of opening paths into parallel worlds.
His attempt to return to his wife, Daniela, and their son, Charlie, eventually revealed that the danger was not limited to the man who had taken his place. Countless versions of Jason had traveled through the same multiverse, each shaped by different choices and experiences.
Season two begins after the family has reached a world that initially appears safe. The trailer quickly removes any expectation that domestic stability will last.
Jason becomes increasingly obsessed with the Box, despite the damage it has already caused. His scientific curiosity and desire for control threaten to draw him back toward the machine rather than away from it.
Daniela responds differently. Her growing paranoia reflects the difficulty of trusting any apparently normal reality after encountering alternate versions of her husband and witnessing how easily one life can be replaced by another.
Charlie, played by Oakes Fegley, is caught between them. Apple describes him as desperate for stability while new forces threaten the family, giving the character a more central emotional position than the child who primarily needed to be rescued during the original journey.
The conflict shifts the series away from a straightforward return-home mission. Jason reached his family, but returning did not erase the knowledge, alternate lives or other versions of the people left behind.
Separate Characters Continue Through the Multiverse
The new season will not remain exclusively with the Dessens.
Alice Braga returns as Amanda, the psychologist who escaped the original Velocity laboratory with Jason and traveled beside him through several realities. She eventually chose to remain in a technologically advanced version of Chicago rather than continue searching for Jason’s home.
Jimmi Simpson also returns as Ryan, whose scientific work contributed to the substance required for traveling through the Box. One version of Jason abandoned Ryan inside another reality during the first season, leaving his location and future unresolved.
Season two brings Amanda and Ryan together as they attempt to find their way home. Their partnership opens another route through the multiverse and gives the series an opportunity to revisit worlds that exist beyond Jason’s immediate family crisis.
Dayo Okeniyi returns as Leighton, whose ambition has expanded into a plan to create what he considers a perfect world. The Box gives him access to endless alternatives, but perfection depends on who controls the destination and who is forced to live inside it.
Amanda Brugel returns as Blair, who is determined to stop him. Her involvement connects the pursuit of an ideal reality with the destructive experiments and institutional power surrounding the original machine.
The returning ensemble allows the new season to follow several groups moving across different realities. Each character approaches the Box with a separate motivation: escape, discovery, control, reunion or prevention.
The Series Moves Beyond the Original Novel
The first season adapted the central narrative of Crouch’s novel while expanding several supporting characters and relationships for television. The second season now enters territory not covered by the original book.
Crouch remains the creator, showrunner and a writer on the series, providing continuity as the adaptation develops beyond its published ending. Executive producer Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry co-wrote every episode of the new season with him.
That arrangement gives the show greater freedom without separating it from the author who designed its rules. The multiverse already contains an effectively unlimited number of possible settings, but the drama depends on preserving recognizable consequences rather than treating each world as a disposable novelty.
Season two can explore what happens when people continue using a technology after learning that every decision may create another path. The Box is no longer only a device that transports Jason between worlds. It has become an object capable of changing the ambitions and behavior of everyone who understands it.
The trailer emphasizes family tension, pursuit and psychological instability more than explanations of multiverse physics. Familiar characters may appear trustworthy in one scene and dangerous in another, while the existence of alternate versions makes ordinary reunions difficult to accept at face value.
Dark Matter Adds an Official Companion Podcast
Apple TV will expand the series with Dark Matter: The Official Podcast, launching alongside the second-season premiere.
Crouch and Ben-Zekry will host the program, which will examine major events from the show, the science associated with the multiverse and the process of extending the adaptation beyond the original novel.
New podcast episodes will arrive with the television episodes throughout the season. Guests will include Edgerton, Connelly, Braga, Simpson, Brugel, Okeniyi, Fegley and members of the production team, along with authors and creators who follow the series.
The podcast will be available through Apple Podcasts, the Sony Pictures Television YouTube channel and the Apple TV YouTube channel.
Before the August 28 premiere, a special catch-up episode will revisit the events of season one. That recap may be particularly useful for a story in which several versions of Jason reached the same reality, Amanda and Ryan ended in unfamiliar worlds and the Box remained available to anyone willing to enter its corridor again.
