A Gaming Mystery: Whatever Happened to Jak and Daxter?

AppleMagazine readers of a particular age will probably recall the Jak and Daxter games, which launched and thrived on the PlayStation 2 in the early 2000s. However, the fantasy adventure franchise has long been dormant – can gamers look forward to a revival at any point in the foreseeable future?

The first game, Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, arrived on PS2 in December 2001 and was particularly renowned for its intricate and often seamless 3D world comparable to that of Super Mario 64. The stars of the game were 15-year-old boy Jak and ottsel – that’s a fictional cross between an otter and a weasel – friend Daxter, and these two appeared in several follow-up adventures over the years.

However, their last “proper” adventure, Jak and Daxter: The Last Frontier, was in 2009. Since then, the pair have re-appeared only sporadically – such as in re-releases and the globally touring Game On 2.0 exhibition, for which official Jak and Daxter memorabilia, pictured above, has been put on display.

Chatting to finder.com, Arne Meyer, Community Strategist for the franchise’s main developer Naughty Dog, admitted this week that his company isn’t currently planning another Jak title – but hasn’t ruled out a return, either…
