AirTag batteries are designed to last about a year under normal daily use, but checking battery status periodically helps avoid unexpected tracking interruptions. Whether you keep AirTags inside luggage, backpacks, keys, or camera equipment, maintaining battery health ensures the device continues sending location updates through the Find My network without gaps.

Apple designed the AirTag to make battery replacement simple. The device uses a common CR2032 lithium coin battery, widely available in electronics stores, supermarkets, and online retailers. Because the battery is user-replaceable, there is no need to visit a service center or replace the device when power runs low. A quick check every few months is usually enough to keep everything running smoothly.

Check the AirTag Battery Level

The Find My app automatically notifies you when an AirTag battery is running low, but you can manually verify battery status at any time using your iPhone or iPad.

Find My > Items > Select AirTag

When the battery level becomes low, a small battery icon appears below the AirTag name, indicating that it is time for a replacement soon. Regularly checking this section is useful before travel, long commutes, or any situation where reliable tracking matters.

How to Replace the AirTag Battery

Replacing the battery takes less than a minute and requires no tools. The polished stainless steel back cover is designed to twist open with gentle pressure.

Press Down on AirTag Cover > Rotate Counterclockwise > Remove Cover > Replace CR2032 Battery > Reattach and Rotate Clockwise

Once the new battery is inserted, the AirTag emits a short sound confirming that power has been restored. If no sound plays, double-check the battery orientation and ensure the positive side faces upward.

Tips to Extend Battery Life

Battery performance can vary depending on how frequently the AirTag is used. Features like Precision Finding, sound playback, and repeated location updates consume additional energy, especially when the device is actively searched or triggered often. Keeping the AirTag firmware updated automatically through iOS helps maintain optimized power efficiency.

Temperature conditions also influence battery longevity. Extremely hot or very cold environments may temporarily reduce battery performance, particularly when AirTags are attached to luggage traveling through different climates. Storing spare CR2032 batteries in travel bags is a practical habit for frequent travelers, photographers, and professionals who depend on continuous tracking.

When to Replace the Battery Proactively

Even before receiving a low-battery alert, replacing the battery once per year can help ensure uninterrupted operation. This routine works especially well for AirTags placed in rarely accessed items such as storage containers, seasonal travel equipment, or emergency bags. Setting a yearly calendar reminder aligned with travel seasons or annual device maintenance can simplify the process and prevent unexpected power loss.

Simple Maintenance

AirTags often protect items that matter most—keys, luggage, equipment, and everyday essentials. A fully powered device maintains continuous communication with the Find My network, ensuring accurate location updates whenever needed. Because the battery replacement process is quick and inexpensive, regular maintenance becomes one of the easiest ways to keep tracking reliable throughout the year.
