Almost 9 in 10 teenagers has an iPhone

Apple continues to be the preferred smartphone manufacturer for teenagers, according to a new report.

Investment firm Piper Sandler shared the data in its biannual teen survey, revealing that Apple’s devices are the most popular amongst teenagers in the United States. Their findings revealed that 87 per cent of teenagers own an iPhone, and 88% expect their next smartphone to be an iPhone.

Over the past decade, the number of teenagers owning iPhones has doubled. In 2012, just 40% of US teenagers had an iPhone, demonstrating the work Apple has done to make its smartphones more desirable and accessible.

According to Piper Sandler, high iPhone adoption means that Apple’s services will benefit, too.

Speaking of the news, a spokesperson for the company said: “We believe the elevated penetration and intention are important given the mature premium smartphone market.

“Additionally, these trends are encouraging as the company continues introducing new iPhones, which could provide a significant product cycle refresh. We think these positive trends can also be a catalyst for further services growth as well, as the install base for Apple hardware continues to grow.”

Right now, 31% of teenagers have an Apple Watch, but it’s still the most popular smartwatch amongst teens. Just 36.8% say they own a wearable device, meaning Apple holds a significant percentage of the market.
