Amazon Prime Video breaks Apple TV record

Amazon’s recently-released Prime Video app has become the fastest downloaded of all time in its first seven days, Amazon and Apple confirmed yesterday (December 18).

Speaking to BESTAppleTV.com, an Amazon spokesperson said: “Prime Video has been a hit with Apple TV customers around the world — it had the most first-week downloads of any app in the history of tvOS.”

Although Apple does not reveal download numbers for Apple TV apps publically, Amazon said that it had received confirmation from the Cupertino firm that its app received more downloads in its first week than any other Apple TV app release.

The announcement comes after Amazon launched its Prime Video app on December 6, a whole seven months after first announcing its plans to join Apple’s TV ecosystem.

Amazon Prime Video allows Prime subscribers to watch TV shows, movies and original content from Amazon, including Transparent and The Grand Tour.

Amazon has more than 90 million Prime subscribers in the United States alone, with its subscriber base growing by an impressive 38% in the last twelve months.
