We aren’t expecting to see Macs with M2 chips – the next landmark development in Apple silicon processors – until later this year. But we’re already beginning to see hints of what could be looming beyond that, the claim having been made that Apple is working on an iMac that would run the next-after-the-next-generation M3 chip.
It was the seasoned Apple watcher Mark Gurman who made the suggestion in his latest Power On newsletter. However, while he said that the M3 iMac was already a project at the Cupertino company, he didn’t go into further detail, other than indicating that he didn’t expect such a device to launch until “the end of next year at the earliest.”
That meant Gurman didn’t elaborate on whether the M3-powered iMac will be a successor to the updated 24-inch model, or instead a larger offering.
Gurman added that he was still of the opinion that an iMac Pro was on the way, but that “it just won’t be anytime soon.”
We previously reported the news here at AppleMagazine of Apple reportedly testing no fewer than nine Macs running M2 chips – including a MacBook Air, two Mac minis, a range of MacBook Pros, and a Mac Pro. Regardless, then, of whether Gurman is right with his latest prediction, these are clearly extremely exciting times for all things Mac.
