Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has shared new details on Apple’s upcoming augmented reality and virtual reality devices, suggesting the first headset will arrive in 2022.
Kuo revealed in a research note that Apple will release a mixed-reality headset with fifteen camera modules, which will allow for advanced augmented reality and “innovative biometrics”.
Eight of the modules will be used for augmented reality video experiences, whilst one module will detect the environment so it can position objects in a scene, and six other modules will be used for biometrics, offering a cutting-edge experience for users.
Apple has reportedly partnered with Largan Precision, a Taiwanese company that creates camera lens modules for phones and tablets. Speaking of the partnership, Kuo said: “We have reiterated several times in our previous reports that even though Largan faces the structural risk of the Huawei smartphone’s significant market share decline due to the US ban, Largan still has long-term investment value as the lens spec upgrade cycle and new application trends remain in place.
“In terms of short-to-medium term trends, we believe that Largan’s following potential benefits are worthy of investors’ attention, including Apple MR/AR headset’s adoption of 15 camera modules.”
Kuo has previously suggested that Apple will release a helmet-like device with Micro-LED displays and AR/VR capabilities next year, priced at around $1,000, before expanding into glasses and even contact lenses.
