Analyst Says Apple Car Could Match BMW’s Sales Success

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has made some favorable predictions about Apple’s prospects with its heavily rumored electric car project – including that Apple could sell as many vehicles as BMW.

In words quoted by the Barron’s Tech Trader Daily blog, Munster expresses his company’s belief that “BMW might be the best comp for what Apple could do with the car in a wildly successful long-term scenario.” He notes that, in 2015, the German automaker sold 1.9 million vehicles globally.

Munster observes that, were Apple to replicate these sales with an average selling price of $75,000, that would bring in an extra $142.5 billion in revenue for the Cupertino company. Therefore, the Apple car, “while it could still be scrapped, has the potential to be a true needle mover.”

Incidentally, Apple reportedly once sought to base its own car on BMW’s above-pictured i3 electric model. However, this would have involved a partnership with BMW which has, apparently, since been abandoned.
