Angry Birds 2 is a hit: that’s the verdict delivered today by its developer, Rovio Entertainment. In only the first week of its release, the game available on iOS and Android has been downloaded over 20 million times, in the process topping the iPhone and iPad charts for free games.
Rovio has revealed that the game has topped charts in over 100 countries and seen its players fire slingshots over 1.4 billion times and progress through over 300 million levels. Creative Director Patrick Liu has enthused about “the enormous groundswell of enthusiasm for the game from loyal fans and casual newcomers alike”.
Rovio Chief Commercial Officer Alex Lambeek has added that, while the game “is off to a great start around the world, including key markets in the Americas and Europe, in China we are gaining a new foothold and seeing remarkable fruits of our well-functioning partnership with Kunlun”.
The success so far achieved by Angry Birds 2 certainly looks impressive when it is considered that it took over nine months for the original Angry Birds game to reach the same number of downloads – and Rovio could be hugely reliant on that success for the months ahead. In the new issue of AppleMagazine arriving on iOS’s Newsstand tomorrow, we look at why the reaction to Angry Birds 2 could frankly make or break the entire future of the Angry Birds franchise. No pressure…
