The hacker group Anonymous have released a statement threatening action against ISIS and al-Qaeda following the tragic events in Paris. Journalists writing for satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo were murdered in cold blood last week in revenge for content produced for the publication. The magazine’s editor was also killed after the magazine published depictions of prophet Mohammed.
The atrocity has led to journalists all over the world emphasizing the need for free speech. The Anonymous video statement features words that translate as: “We are declaring war against you, the terrorists.”
The masked figure representing Anonymous says that it will close down online social media accounts related to terrorists in revenge for the fatal attacks. The video featured a hashtag, #OpCharlieHebdo. Some figures have claimed that taking down extremist websites will make it tougher for security organizations to track terrorists.
Anonymous is a high-profile activist group that strives to protect democracy. It has carried out attacks on governments and made threats against the BBC. It has also been linked with last year’s controversial leaking of various sex tapes.
The two suspects were finally killed last week by police in a warehouse near Paris. A number of people were held hostage at a Parisian supermarket at the same time before the captor was killed. Four hostages lost their lives. It is believed that the two attacks were linked and that all three captors were connected.
