Apple has acquired the classical music streaming service Primephonic.
The company has confirmed it intends to fold the service into Apple Music, adding another string to its bow and offering classical music fans a personalized experience on iPhones.
Primephonic describes itself as offering an “outstanding listening experience” with a user interface and search functionality that has been optimized for classical music fans, with personalized recommendations based on users’ listening habits on the platform.
Speaking of the acquisition, Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of Apple Music and Beats, said: “We love and have a deep respect for classical music, and Primephonic has become a fan favorite for classical enthusiasts. Together, we’re bringing great new classical features to Apple Music, and in the near future, we’ll deliver a dedicated classical experience that will truly be the best in the world.”
Apple has confirmed that it will fold Primephonic into its Apple Music service, improving the classical music experience on the platform. Playlists and audio content will make their way over to Primephonic, and a dedicated Primephonic experience will be offered. Apple will take the platform offline on September 7, launching a dedicated classical music app in 2022.
The company will offer Primephonic subscribers six months of free Apple Music.
