Apple is reportedly working on 6G technology and has pencilled in a 2030 rollout.
The company has begun hiring engineers to work on the next-generation wireless technology, with positions available in Silicon Valley and San Diego, where Apple already works on wireless tech and chip development.
A job advertisement for the technology reads: “You will have the unique and rewarding opportunity to craft next-generation wireless technology that will have a deep impact on future Apple products. In this role, you will be at the center of a cutting-edge research group responsible for creating next-generation disruptive radio access technologies over the next decade.”
Those who are hired to work on the project will be responsible or “research and design” of 6G wireless communication systems, and “participate in industry/academic forums passionate about 6G technology.”
Apple introduced 5G to its iPhones in 2020, and though 6G is not expected to roll out for another ten years, it’s clear that Apple wants to be ahead of the curve and play a bigger role in its wider development. Though it’s too early to say exactly what that means, Apple could even become involved in 6G masts and modems.
But the company isn’t the first to begin work on 6G – last year, A&T revealed it had begun work on the technology, promising speeds 100 times faster than 5G.
