Apple’s former design chief has parted ways with Apple.
Jony Ive left Apple in 2019 but continued to work with the organization on a freelance basis, through his own design firm LoveFrom. Now, it appears as though the partnership between the two has come to an end – that’s according to The New York Times.
It marks the end of a 30-year partnership, with Ive responsible for designing some of the company’s biggest products, including Apple Stores, the iPhone, Apple Watch, and more. Ive first left Apple in June 2019 and launched his own design firm, but confirmed that Apple would be one of his primary clients. Since, Ive has helped design a number of products including the controversial 24-inch iMac, as well as offering support for the upcoming Apple Car. It’s also thought Ive played a role in Apple’s AR/VR headset.
Apple signed a contract with Ive worth more than $100 million when he left Apple, but have decided not to renew the deal. According to reports, Apple began to question the value they were getting from Ive, and were frustrated at the number of Apple designers leaving the company to work for Ive’s firm, LoveFrom instead.
Apple’s design language has changed a great deal in the past couple of years, most notably with its new ‘industrial’ design that’s led by Evans Hankey. We’ve seen a slew of new products such as the redesigned MacBook Pro which firmly puts function over form.
