Apple has announced a Service Program for its AirPods Pro models months after users began complaining of problems with their earphones. Apple has confirmed that, after testing the products, some units have been affected by a problem that causes “sound issues”.

A very small number of AirPods Pro users reported crackling or static sounds in some situations, such as when listening to a Podcast or Music. On top of this, users with an affected model will notice that their Active Noise Cancellation doesn’t work as it should.

Apple has confirmed that the models affected were made before October 2020, and outlined the that users would notice “crackling or static sounds that increase in loud environments, with exercise or while talking on the phone,” and “Active Noise Cancellation not working as expected, such as a loss of bass sound, or an increase in background sounds, such as street or airplane noise.”

Users who have noticed these issues should contact Apple directly and take their AirPods to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider where they’ll be replaced for free.

The company added that technicians will examine the AirPods Pro to ensure that they have a genuine malfunction, and those that do not will not be replaced as part of the program.
