Apple has announced its first raft of macOS devices as part of its transition to Apple Silicon at a special event in Cupertino today (November 10), unveiling Apple’s innovative M1 chip.
The company says that the new chip is the most powerful that it has ever created, and it has been designed exclusively for the Mac range. As Apple has done with its iPad and iPhone families, the company has taken the development of chips in-house and away from partners like Intel to offer a better user experience and more advanced, industry-leading hardware.
The new chips are small in size and power-efficient, which allow Apple to take the “biggest leap ever for the Mac.” Apple has optimized the chips for MacBooks, iMacs, and Mac minis, using a 5-nanometer process technology to pack in more than 16 billion transistors.
This has allowed Apple to offer the world’s fastest CPU core in low-power silicon, alongside the best CPU performance per watt, and to take macOS to greater heights, Apple Neural Engine.
Though we await benchmarks from third parties, the new M1 chip offers users 350% more CPU performance, as well as six times faster GPU performance and 15 times faster machine learning capabilities, offering twice the battery life as previous-generation Macs.
Speaking of the new M1 chip at today’s event, Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Technologies, said: There has never been a chip like M1, our breakthrough SoC for the Mac.
“It builds on more than a decade of designing industry-leading chips for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, and ushers in a whole new era for the Mac.”
“When it comes to low-power silicon, M1 has the world’s fastest CPU core, the world’s fastest integrated graphics in a personal computer, and the amazing machine learning performance of the Apple Neural Engine.
“With its unique combination of remarkable performance, powerful features, and incredible efficiency, M1 is by far the best chip we’ve ever created.”
