Apple announces new Self Service Repair scheme

Apple has announced its own Self Service Repair program to allow users to repair their own devices.

The Cupertino company will launch a new online store that sells parts and tools needed to repair iPhones and iPads, and will allow customers who feel comfortable with the idea of repairing their own iPhone the chance to buy genuine parts, tools, and manuals. To begin with, iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 repair parts will be offered.

Speaking of the news, the company’s chief operating officer Jeff Williams said: “Creating greater access to Apple genuine parts gives our customers even more choice if a repair is needed.

“In the past three years, Apple has nearly doubled the number of service locations with access to Apple genuine parts, tools, and training, and now we’re providing an option for those who wish to complete their own repairs.”

Apple says that the first phase of the scheme will focus on commonly-serviced parts like the display, battery, and camera, but the firm added that next year more kinds of repairs will be available. Apple will also allow consumers to repair their MacBooks and iMacs, though we don’t have a date for those products joining the scheme yet.

The firm will sell more than 200 parts and tools for iPhone 12‌ and ‌iPhone 13‌ repairs, and consumers will be asked to refer to a Repair Manual. They can then return used or broken parts – like old batteries – to Apple and will receive a credit for their purchase.
