Apple has announced an all-new iPad mini, sporting a new design similar to the iPad Pro.

The Cupertino company showed off the device, a surprise for the event which had previously been expected to feature only iPhones and Apple Watches, with its larger 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display and A15 Bionic chip, offering 80% faster performance than the previous generation.

A new entry-level iPad was also announced, but it retained its existing design to keep costs low.

The new iPad mini also offers USB-C support and is sold in a 5G-enabled option to allow for on-the-go work.

Speaking of the new iPad mini at the event, Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said: “With its ultra-portable design and wide range of uses from everyday tasks to creative and enterprise applications, there’s nothing else like iPad mini.

“With a new all-screen Liquid Retina display, a massive boost in performance, new advanced cameras on the front and back, Center Stage, USB-C, 5G, and support for Apple Pencil, the new iPad mini is a huge leap forward that can be held in the palm of your hand.”
