Apple asks suppliers to make 90 million iPhone 14 units

Apple is reportedly ramping up iPhone 14 production.

According to Bloomberg, the company has asked suppliers to make at least 90 million iPhone 14 units, despite previous concerns that demand would fall amidst the economic downturn. Last year, Apple asked suppliers to build 90 million iPhone 13 models, and now it appears the firm expects demand to be at least as high as last year. Typically, Apple asks for around 75 million iPhone units at launch, so it shows that the firm is expecting higher than usual demand thanks to new features and perhaps a significant percentage of people upgrading.

Apple expects to assemble 220 million iPhones in the full year, according to a report.

“Apple Inc has asked suppliers to build at least as many of its next-generation iPhones this year as in 2021, counting on an affluent clientele and dwindling competition to weather a global electronics downturn,” said Bloomberg.

“The tech giant is telling its assemblers to make 90 million of its newest devices, on par with last year, despite deteriorating projections for the smartphone market, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The Cupertino, California-based company still expects to assemble roughly 220 million iPhones in total for 2022, also about level with last year, according to one of the people.”

Apple is expected to announce this year’s iPhone 14 range next month and will introduce four models including an all-new iPhone Max, offering the same form factor as the iPhone Pro Max, without the pro features.
