Apple CEO Challenges Home State on LGBT Rights

GLBT Rights

Apple CEO Tim Cook is challenging his home state of Alabama to do more to ensure the rights of people based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Cook says educational equality is also a key civil rights issue. He says Apple is giving $100 million for technology for 114 schools in 29 states to help.

Cook made the comments Monday at the state Capitol while being recognized as one of eight new members of the Alabama Academy of Honor.

Cook recalled his boyhood days in coastal Alabama. He says the state has made progress on racial equality, although it was too slow.

He says the state is still too slow on equality and legal protections for the LGBT community.

Alabama is among the states that doesn’t recognize same-sex marriage.
