Apple has confirmed plans to launch its new Podcasts subscription service on June 15.

An email was sent to podcasters confirming the release date of the new service, which will allow creators to charge a small monthly fee for access to exclusive content on the Podcasts platform.

The idea is to help Apple compete in an increasingly crowded podcasts market.

Alongside the release of iOS 14.6, Podcasts Subscriptions was introduced for the first time, though Apple then confirmed that the feature would be delayed to offer ‘the best experience” following a raft of criticisms and complaints about the redesigned iOS Podcasts app.

Speaking of the launch, Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, said: “Fifteen years ago, Apple took podcasts mainstream, offering creators a premier, open platform to inform, entertain, and inspire hundreds of millions of listeners around the world.

“Today, Apple Podcasts is the best place for listeners to discover and enjoy millions of great shows, and we are proud to lead the next chapter of podcasting with Apple Podcasts Subscriptions. We’re excited to introduce this powerful new platform to creators around the world, and we can’t wait to hear what they make with it.”
