Apple confirms Tap to Pay on iPhone will launch this June

Apple has confirmed that its new Tap to Pay on iPhone feature will launch this month.

The company first announced the service earlier in the year, and will now launch the feature later this month in the United States. It’s expected that it will follow in other territories in the coming months.

The service removes the need for a card machine or payment terminal – instead, users can use their iPhone as a payment terminal and have customers tap their own iPhones, Android phones, and cards onto the iPhone to pay for goods and services.

Users with an iPhone XS or later will be able to accept payments, and it’ll work in the same way as any Apple Pay transaction. The service uses NFC technology that’s already baked into iPhones to securely authenticate payments, though it’s worth noting that it’s not Apple itself that will be offering the transactions.

Apple has partnered with a number of brands to bring Tap to Pay on ‌iPhone‌ to life, and at launch, small businesses will be able to set up the service via Square, Chase, and Stripe. Other payment vendors will likely integrate in the coming weeks and months, each taking a different percentage of any transaction as a processing fee.
