Apple is reportedly considering releasing an iPad with a larger display.
According to Mark Gurman, in his new Power On newsletter for Bloomberg, the Cupertino company is currently experimenting internally with iPads featuring larger displays, though the company is unlikely to release one for at least a ‘few years’.
“I’m told that Apple has engineers and designers exploring larger iPads that could hit stores a couple of years down the road at the earliest. They’re unlikely for next year—with Apple’s attention on a redesigned iPad Pro in the current sizes for 2022—and it’s possible they never come at all. But a big iPad would be the perfect device for many people, including me, and would continue to blur the lines between tablet and laptop,” Gurman said.
Right now, Apple sells its iPad Pro in 11-inch and 12.9-inch display sizes, so a larger display would be between 14-inches and 16-inches to correspond to the MacBook Pro range. How this would impact battery life remains to be seen, but we do know that Apple is already testing an iPad with a glass back, that would offer wireless charging.
Releasing an even larger iPad Pro would further encourage professionals to make the switch from a laptop to an iPad, but many argue that iPadOS is just not yet advanced enough to support everyday tasks in the same way Windows 10 and Surface tablets are. Apple could choose to release a larger iPad with an overhauled iPadOS that borrows more from macOS, especially now the two share the M1 chip.
