Apple could remove the notch from this year’s iPhones, according to a new report.
When the company introduced the iPhone X in 2017, Apple also launched Face ID, allowing iPhone users to scan their faces rather than scanning a fingerprint as they did with Touch ID.
However, though the technology was widely praised and has allowed for a whole host of new features, including Animoji and Memoji, it came bundled with an ugly ‘notch’ at the top of the iPhone, which was controversial amongst critics and fans who wanted a bigger screen and fewer distractions.
Apple’s original plan was to create an iPhone that was a “sheet of glass”.
The notch currently features the front-facing camera and Face ID security mechanism, and though both of those technologies will be vital to this year’s iPhones, Apple has reportedly found a way to hide the notch and create a more streamlined smartphone experience.
According to reliable analyst Ming Chi-Kuo, Apple will launch at least one ‘bezel-free’ iPhone in 2021, hiding the technology under the screen.
The new iPhone will also reintroduce Touch ID, offering two forms of authentication and improved security over a singular login.
And this week, Credit Suisse reportedly presented in China and confirmed that it was working on a notch-less iPhone with Apple, perhaps even set to be launched in 2020 rather than 2021.
Insiders confirmed that Apple had been working on an under-the-display fingerprint scanner to bring back Touch ID and that the tech might be ready for this year’s iPhones, which are also set to feature a new design akin to the iPhone 4 and the introduction of 5G capability.
