As Apple introduces the slimmest iteration of its iPad Pro yet, potential buyers are understandably concerned about its robustness, recalling the infamous “bendgate” debacle from 2018.
That year, Apple acknowledged that the newly launched models featured a slight curvature due to the manufacturing process. Despite assurances that this bend wouldn’t deteriorate with time or impact the iPad’s functionality, the revelation did not sit well with consumers paying premium prices.
With the release of the 2024 iPad Pro models, Apple is taking proactive steps to ensure a repeat of past issues doesn’t occur.
In a discussion with tech reviewer Arun Maini, John Ternus, Apple’s senior VP of hardware engineering, outlined new design enhancements aimed at fortifying the device.
A significant addition is a protective cowling over the main logic board.
This metallic shield not only aids in heat dissipation, but also significantly increases the product’s rigidity by effectively creating a central rib that extends across the device.
While it’s inevitable that some will test the limits of the new iPad Pro’s durability through extreme stress tests, the company hopes these structural improvements will dispel any concerns regarding its endurance in everyday use.
Early feedback from various reviewers already suggests that the new model holds up well in terms of durability, despite its thinner profile.
Apple is confident that these upgrades will help avoid any new controversies as it rolls out its latest technology.
The 2024 M4 iPad Pro is now available, starting at $999, directly from Apple’s website.
