Apple increasing iPhone 11 production due to strong demand

Apple is asking suppliers to increase production on the new iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro by up to 10% due to better-than-expected demand, according to the Nikkei Asian Review.

It’s thought that this will add around 8 million additional units to the current production plans, with Apple shipping more iPhone units than it had anticipated, despite adding relatively few new features to this year’s phone.

Speaking to the Nikkei Asian Review, one source said that “This autumn is so far much busier than we expected. Previously, Apple was quite conservative about placing orders,” with the company reportedly ordering fewer iPhone 11’s than last year’s iPhone XS series of smartphones.

“After the increase, prepared production volume for the iPhone 11 series will be higher compared to last year,” the source added.

According to the report, the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro models are the two iPhones with the biggest demand, whilst Apple is revising orders of the iPhone 11 Pro Max down to balance production with its current demand.

It’s interesting to hear that the Max model is not performing as well as the other devices, but perhaps its prohibitive price point is deterring customers from upgrading, especially with a big release expected in 2020.

What we should note is that stories circulate virtually every year around Apple cutting production on the latest iPhone, but we never know whether this is because of weaker-than-expected demand or because Apple is scaling back following the initial excitement and hype of a new iPhone, where customers pre-order on day one.

Apple’s 2019 iPhone lineup was praised by fans and critics alike, and despite not introducing 5G technology on bilateral wireless charging as previously rumored, the $699 price point of the iPhone 11 was clearly attractive enough to persuade more customers to upgrade from older models.

Next year, Apple is widely expected to introduce a 5G-capable iPhone with bilateral wireless charging, the reintroduction of Touch ID and a bunch of other features including the first major redesign since the iPhone X.
