Apple Inks Deal to Power iCloud with Google Cloud Platform

Apple has reportedly signed a deal for Google Cloud Platform to power parts of iCloud and other cloud services – and, as a result, hugely reduced its use of Amazon Web Services.

This news has come from what CRN describes only as “multiple sources with knowledge of the matter”. Apparently, Apple put pen to paper on the Google deal late last year – and the Cupertino company is now spending between $400 million and $600 million on Google Cloud Platform.

Those figures are said to have been revealed by Google executives to partners; however, this range could not be independently confirmed, while it is unclear whether the figures refer to an annual spending rate or a specific amount of capacity.

At any rate, according to the sources, Apple remains a customer of AWS, having not completely abandoned the platform. Last month, Morgan Stanley speculated that Apple may seek to reduce its expenditure on AWS by shifting more computing to its own data centers.
