A notification icon is visible at the bottom left, showcasing new features like App Clips introduced in iOS 14.

Apple has announced iOS 14 at its virtual Worldwide Developers Conference.

The new operating system – set to be released this September – introduces a range of new features including a redesigned home screen, where users will be able to add expanded widgets in a similar style to Windows Phone.

Apple also confirmed the introduction of App Clips, which allow developers to create small micro-apps – similar to Mini Programs offered on Chinese social network WeChat. Rather than downloading an app, you’ll be able to scan a QR code and access some of the app’s core functionality – ideal for car parks, restaurants, and e-tickets.

The company also confirmed the long-rumored feature CarKey, which allows users to add their car key to their iPhone and unlock their vehicles using NFC. Users will also be able to share their car key with friends and family via iMessage, though right now, the feature is only available on select vehicles. More are expected in 2021.

Translate is another new feature coming to iOS 14 – Apple’s Google Translate competitor. The company stressed that the focus was on conversations, introducing a new dual-screen option where customers could speak to a cashier in a supermarket when in another country, facilitating real-time conversations with automatic translations.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated soon with more information.
