Apple introduces Safari 14 for macOS as a standalone update

A laptop screen displaying macOS Big Sur showcases a web browser with multiple open tabs, including one for "Geraud LeCarduner" and an active tab featuring Kvell's website. The Kvell tab highlights a colorful coat rack banner with the text "Proudly designed for everyday living," enhanced by Safari web extensions.

Apple has released Safari 14 as a standalone update for macOS Catalina and Mojave.

The Cupertino company launched iOS 14, iPadOS 14, watchOS 7, and tvOS 14 yesterday, but as is now tradition, the next-generation macOS will follow in a month’s time. Rather than making consumers wait for a new Safari experience, Apple dropped the new Safari early.

The updated web browser has a new design and features such as privacy reports, a new built-in translator, and support for 4K HDR videos on websites like YouTube and Apple TV.

Users who have a Mac running on macOS Catalina or macOS Mojave can take advantage of the new update, and enjoy the rest of macOS Big Sur when it launches later in the year.

One of the biggest new features with this year’s Safari update is an overhauled home screen, which can be customized with wallpapers and website suggestions from Siri. Privacy is another big selling point with this year’s release, with users now able to check a “health screen” for each app, offering a privacy report and explaining what data is being collected.

To download Safari 14, head to System Preferences now.
