Tap to Pay utilizes the Near Field Communication (NFC) technology embedded in newer iPhone models, turning the device into a payment terminal for transactions via a single tap. This eliminates the need for additional hardware or payment terminals such as those provided by Block Inc.’s Square, which require plugging in or a Bluetooth connection.
After debuting in the United States in 2022 and subsequently extending to Australia earlier this year, the service is now available in the UK. Small businesses to large retailers can leverage Tap to Pay on iPhone to accept Apple Pay, contactless credit and debit cards, and other digital wallets through a partner-supported iOS app, including those at Apple Store locations.
Initially, payment platforms Revolut and Tyl by NatWest are supporting the contactless payment service in the country. Apple has also indicated that additional platforms like Zettle by PayPal, Viva Wallet, Worldline, Stripe, SumUp, Adyen, Dojo, and myPOS will be added to this list soon.
Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, Jennifer Bailey, commented on the launch stating, “We’ve seen Tap to Pay on iPhone transform the checkout experience for so many different types of businesses, and we’re thrilled to now support merchants across the U.K. by offering an easy, secure, and private way to accept contactless payments using the power, security, and convenience of iPhone, with no additional hardware needed.
To utilize Tap to Pay on iPhone, merchants will require an iPhone Xs or later running the latest iOS version.
The service is currently available for payment platforms and developers in the UK to integrate into their iOS apps.
