Apple Music Gains 10 Million Subscribers After Only 6 Months

Apple Music’s subscriber base has grown at an astonishing pace, having reportedly surpassed 10 million. However, it remains unclear how much ground it has made on music streaming market leader Spotify.

The news of this impressive milestone for Apple Music was broke by Financial Times on Sunday, citing unspecified sources with knowledge of the matter. With this growth, the streaming service appears to have beaten recent expectations; only last month, music industry analyst Mark Mulligan had predicted that it would recruit nearly 8 million subscribers by the end of 2015.

Still, a reliable number for Spotify’s current subscriber base is not available for comparison. Business Insider reported that, upon getting in touch with Spotify on Sunday, the company’s communications head Jonathan Prince claimed: “The second half of 2015 was our fastest subscriber growth ever.”

Precise numbers, however, went without mention – leaving Business Insider to guess that Spotify’s subscribers numbered about 25-30 million by the close of last year.
