Apple Original Films has secured the rights to The Flick, a new high-tension thriller set within the world of air traffic control, starring Glen Powell. The film will be directed by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, known for Crazy, Stupid, Loveand Focus, and will be produced by Chernin Entertainment in partnership with Apple Studios.

The project adds another major production to Apple’s growing film portfolio as the company continues to invest heavily in theatrical and streaming releases through Apple TV.

A New Thriller Anchored by Glen Powell

The Flick follows the story of an air traffic controller whose life spirals into chaos after a critical mistake in the tower leads to a series of unexpected and dangerous events. The plot has been described as a psychological thriller that blends human drama with high-stakes tension.

Glen Powell, coming off acclaimed performances in Hit Man and Top Gun: Maverick, will play the lead role, marking his first collaboration with Apple Original Films. The actor has become one of Hollywood’s most in-demand talents, balancing major studio projects with character-driven performances.

Requa and Ficarra will direct from a screenplay by Ted Lasso writer and co-creator Bill Lawrence, whose involvement hints at a mix of intense pacing and emotional depth. Production is expected to begin in early 2026.

Part of Apple’s Expanding Film Slate

Apple Original Films has steadily built a reputation for acquiring high-quality, star-driven projects that bridge theatrical prestige and streaming appeal. The studio’s 2025 slate includes titles such as Ridley Scott’s Napoleon II and Martin Scorsese’s next film under the Apple partnership, continuing its focus on cinematic storytelling supported by global distribution.

The company’s recent critical and commercial successes, including Killers of the Flower Moon and Argylle, have strengthened Apple’s standing in the industry, attracting top filmmakers and production companies seeking creative autonomy and high-end production standards.

Apple’s film division operates alongside Apple TV, which serves as the exclusive home for its originals following limited theatrical runs. The company continues to balance award-season ambitions with wide accessibility through streaming premieres shortly after cinema releases.

Chernin Entertainment’s Ongoing Partnership

Chernin Entertainment, which previously collaborated with Apple on Sharper and Argylle, will produce The Flick as part of its ongoing multi-picture partnership with Apple Studios. The deal has yielded several high-profile projects blending commercial appeal with prestige direction.

The production company is expected to handle on-set development and post-production logistics, with Apple overseeing global marketing and release. Distribution is anticipated through a hybrid model, combining theatrical release in select territories with worldwide streaming availability on Apple TV.

Glen Powell’s rising profile and Apple’s strategic approach to original content position The Flick as one of the studio’s most anticipated thrillers heading into 2026.
