Apple overhauls macOS with new look and features

A desktop Mac and a MacBook are displayed against a light gray, wave-patterned background. The desktop Mac showcases a photo editing application, while the MacBook screen features a music library. Both devices run macOS, highlighting Apple's new features in their latest software update.

Apple has shown off a stunning new redesign of its macOS operating system.

In Big Sur, the company has transformed the appearance of the desktop operating system, inspired by iOS, in what the company calls a “spacious design that makes navigation easier while putting more controls at users’ fingertips.”

Apple has unified the macOS operating system with iOS, introducing a new app-like design for all of its applications, and brought over other features such as Control Center to make it easier to enter into Dark Mode or skip a track on Apple Music.

The update will ship this September, alongside the “biggest update to Safari since its original launch in 2003”, introducing a bunch of privacy-focused enhancements designed to encourage consumers to make the leap from Google Chrome and Firefox. Apple says the new Safari is up to 50% faster than Google Chrome.

Messages has been given some love, and new planning tools have been introduced to Maps.

Apple has also made some industry-leading privacy features, and introduced new developer tools as part of Xcode, making it easier to update Project Catalyst apps, meaning that new applications and use cases should be arriving in the coming months.
