Apple Pay Being Readied for Launch in Taiwan, Report Reveals

The Taiwan-based news outlet DigiTimes reports that the national Financial Supervisory Commission has started accepting banks’ applications to offer the payment service Apple Pay in the East Asian island country. However, Apple Pay might not actually arrive there until next year…

The commission has reportedly revealed that only credit card payments will, to begin with, be possible with Apple Pay in Taiwan – though other payment tools, like debit cards, may later be supported as well. CTBC Bank, E.SUN Commercial Bank, Cathay United Commercial Bank and Taishin International Bank are all said to be expected launch partners for Apple Pay there.

However, DigiTimes also reports that it won’t be until “at the end of 2016 at the earliest” that Taiwan users will have the option of applying for use of Apple Pay. Presumably, when the service does eventually become fully available in Taiwan, it will be compatible with all of the same Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches and Macs, as it is elsewhere for in-store and in-app payments.
