After releasing iOS 10.1 and watchOS 3.1 earlier today, Apple activated Apple Pay in Japan – making the payment service available for use on various iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch devices in the country.
As in other Apple Pay territories, the service can be used to make in-store payments through the NFC chips in various iPhone and Apple Watch models, in-app and web-based payments on various iPhone and iPad models, and strictly web-based payments on many Mac computers.
However, Japanese versions of the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and Apple Watch Series 2 also come with support for the FeliCa payments standard that is commonly adopted in Japan. This allows the devices to be used for purchases at locations accepting Suica, QUICPay or iD payments.
Issuers offering credit and debit cards that can be used with Apple Pay in Japan include Aeon, American Express, Credit Saison, d Card, JCB, MasterCard, MUFG Card, Orico, SoftBank and View Card.
