Apple Pay to Reach Websites Ahead of Holiday Shopping Season

The mobile payment service Apple Pay should soon move beyond apps and become available to also use for purchasing through retail websites, according to a report from Re/code.

Citing “multiple sources”, the site says that Apple has been informing potential partners of its plans. Apparently, Apple Pay will become a payment option on sites viewed within the Safari browser on iPhones and iPads with the Touch ID fingerprint technology.

Apple has reportedly mulled over also adding this Apple Pay functionality to the Mac. Though there is no mention of this by Re/code, this move would presumably call for Apple to bring out either new Mac models including the Touch ID sensor, or a Mac-compatible Touch ID sensor accessory.

According to sources, Apple has told potential partners that the web version of Apple Pay will be ready ahead of this year’s holiday shopping season. Apple’s annual WWDC conference, which is typically held in June, could see the strategy officially announced, Re/code adds.
