Apple planning Podcasts overhaul for iOS 14

A person holds a smartphone displaying a selection of podcast covers in front of a laptop. The laptop screen is blurred, and there's a book titled "Engine" on the right side of the scene. The setting appears to be an Apple-centric workspace, possibly running iOS 14.

A new report from 9to5Mac suggests that Apple will overhaul the Podcasts app in iOS 14.

According to their inside source, the company has been planning “major changes” to the app – including the introduction of curated content like the Apple Music app, in an attempt to compete against the likes of Spotify, who have invested millions into exclusive audio shows.

A new “For You” tab is expected to be introduced inside of the app. Similar to Apple Music – which displays songs, playlists, albums, and artists you’ve already been listening to – the new Podcasts app will recommend performers, hosts, and topics you might want to try out.

As you listen to content on the platform, the Podcasts app will learn about your preferences and recommend new podcasts that are available to stream. Apple is also adding a new user section to the Podcasts app, so your friends can see what you’re listening to, and vice versa.

Another change expected to be introduced in the new Podcasts app is Bonus Content, which will give creators an opportunity to add “extras” and other tidbits away from the main podcasts feed. Think of this as a room for “footnotes” episodes, outtakes, and other content.

The news of an updated Podcasts app comes at the same time as Apple competes with Spotify on podcasts content. The European streaming giant has been splashing the cash and playing millions of dollars for exclusive content, including the highly-controversial Joe Rogan deal.

Apple hopes that, by investing in its Podcasts app, consumers will pivot towards it, and in the years ahead, Apple can add another services string to its bow with premium Podcasts.

We’ll hear all about the new Podcasts app at WWDC 2020, which will take place virtually in lieu of a physical event due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Keep it locked on AppleMagazine next week as we’ll be bringing you all the announcements, as we get them.
