Apple planning to add double-sided chip to next Apple Watch

Apple is planning to introduce a new double-sided chip to its Apple Watches to allow for more battery space.

According to a new report from DigiTimes, the company has been developing a double-sided System in Package (SiP) packaging in partnership with Taiwanese supplier ASE Technology,  allowing for module miniaturization.

We don’t know for certain what Apple’s intentions are with this year’s Apple Watch, but miniaturizing the chip could allow for a bigger battery pack to allow users to wear their Apple Watches in bed, reduce the display bezels, or even introduce a rumored flat-edged design similar to the iPhone 12 and iPad Pro design language.

Previous rumors suggest Apple is working on new health features like blood glucose monitoring and body temperature checking, though it’s unknown whether they’ll come with this year’s Apple Watch or a future update.
