Apple Planning to Allow Subscription Content in News App

Though all stories in Apple’s News app can currently be freely viewed, Apple intends to allow publishers to offer subscription content through this stock iOS app, according to two sources cited by Reuters.

At the moment, subscriber-only publications on Apple News can either freely share content or provide only excerpts accompanied by prompts for readers to visit the publication’s website to see more. Such publications include The Wall Street Journal, which daily posts a small number of articles to the app.

However, publishers are said to be eager for Apple to provide them with more information about the readers of their content – and this new move is intended to address these concerns, the sources claim.

Apple News was introduced with iOS 9 and allows the platform’s users in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia to collate news feeds from various outlets for a personalised news reading experience. The service has offered an AppleMagazine news feed since December.
