Apple hopes to switch to a custom 5G modem in the next two years, according to analysts.
Barclays analysts Blayne Curtis and Thomas O’Malley revealed in a research note that by 2023, Apple will use custom-designed cellular modems for its iPhones, with Qorvo and Broadcom responsible for manufacturing the new in-house solution, taking away business from rival modem manufacturers and giving Apple authority and control of its hardware.
According to a number of insiders, Apple began work on a custom modem in 2020 following its acquisition of Intel’s modem business, and the company plans to support sub-6GHz and mmWave bands.
Moving to an in-house solution not only reduces Apple’s reliance on third parties, but it gives them more control over development and will cut costs significantly.
Right now, iPhones use Qualcomm modems, though the two companies have struggled in recent years; Apple and Qualcomm engaged in legal battles that have since been resolved.
