Apple planning under-display Face ID for next year’s iPhones

Apple will add under-display Face ID to its 2024 iPhones.

The possibility of an under-display Face ID feature on the iPhone 16 Pro models has been a recurring rumor. The latest report suggests that this technology would be the next step after the current Dynamic Island design, which features a single punch-hole cutout for the front-facing camera.

When the iPhone 5S was first introduced, Touch ID was a groundbreaking feature. Apple’s fingerprint sensor was more sophisticated than most on the market and was integrated seamlessly into the home button. However, with the iPhone X, Apple moved to Face ID, allowing for a more minimalist design with a nearly edge-to-edge display.

The initial implementation of Face ID required a “notch” on the top of the display to house the necessary technology. While some users got used to this design element, others found it unsightly. With the iPhone 14 lineup, Apple moved to a “hole-punch and pill” cutout design for the front-facing camera and Face ID sensors. The company added a Dynamic Island feature to make the cutouts appear as a single slot.

Embedding biometrics technology under the display would eliminate the need for a notch or cutout. Apple has patents for both under-display Touch ID and under-display Face ID. However, according to a recent patent application, the company is more likely to include embedded Touch ID.

In recent reports from Apple analysts Ming-Chi Kuo and Ross Young, it was suggested that Apple may implement the under-panel Face ID function on the iPhone 16 Pro models. This would mean that only a single punch-hole would be needed for the front-facing camera, eliminating the need for the Dynamic Island feature.
