Apple has seen its paid podcast subscription service grow 300% since June last year.
That’s according to a spokesperson for the company, who spoke to Digiday about a new Dateline subscription podcast.
It’s the first time we’ve had any direct information about the success of the subscription-based service since its launch and an unusual move for Apple which is usually relatively quiet about the exact metrics of its sales and subscription growth rates.
According to Apple, more than a quarter of the top 100 shows on the Podcasts chart offer a subscription option. Apple first launched the service back in April 2021, designed to allow creators to offer consumers and listeners benefits like ad-free listening and extra content.
Apple takes a 15% to 30% cut – 30% for the first year, and 15% for every subsequent year a user is subscribed, encouraging creators to implement policies that reward repeat subscribers.
