Apple promote Portrait Mode in iPhone 7 Plus with new ad

A new advert, entitled ‘The City’, has been released via Apple’s YouTube channel to highlight the photographic capabilities of Portrait Mode on the iPhone 7 Plus.

In the ad, two people spot each other from across a crowded street before joining one another on a series of adventures, while taking photos with the iPhone 7 Plus. The advert’s tagline reads – “With Portrait mode on iPhone 7 Plus, you can focus on what you love and leave everything else behind.”

There have already been several ads focusing on this smartphone features, including “Soul Mate” and “Creek”,  15-second long clips showing how Portrait Mode blurs the background to make the subject stand out. Introduced in iOS 10.1, this feature uses a shallow depth of field that mimics high-end DSLR cameras. By taking advantage of the 56mm telephoto lens on the iPhone 7 Plus, Apple’s signal processor can recognize the people and objects that are meant to be in the foreground. This results in an image that is normally not possible with a smartphone.

Recently, Condé Nast used the iPhone 7 Plus camera in Portrait Mode to shoot the covers of two of their most popular magazines: ‘Traveler’ and ‘Bon Appétit’.
