Apple Raises App Size Limit

Tech giant Apple has doubled the size cap on iOS apps to 4GB. The decision is good news for developers hoping to include more media in their software. It’s thought that the move will also excite gamers.

A statement from the company said: “The size limit of an app package submitted through iTunes Connect has increased from 2GB to 4GB, so you can include more media in your submission and provide a more complete, rich user experience upon installation.”

Rival Google Play increased its cap to 4GB in 2012. Despite the announcement, the cellular network deliver limit has remained at 100MB, meaning that any apps larger than this limit have to be downloaded over WiFi. The 2GB limit has been in place since the 2008 launch of the App Store.

Apple’s iOS SDK is used to develop apps sold through the App Store. Some apps are free, but many include in-app monetization, with features being bought inside the apps. Apple takes a cut of 30% from app revenue, with publishers receiving the other 70%. Figures released in summer 2014 showed that 1.2 million apps were available through the App Store, with Google Play hosting 1.3 million, making them the biggest app store. A film about late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs is currently in production.
