Apple has begun the transition from Intel to Apple M1 chips with the release of three new devices at today’s special event (November 10), with Tim Cook and Co overhauling the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini, offering unbeatable performance on the Mac.
Apple started its keynote presentation by unveiling its new M1 chip, which represents a new era for the company’s computing arm.
Until now, Apple has relied upon third parties like Intel to provide chips for its notebooks and desktop computers, but the company confirmed earlier in the year that it was to move to custom silicon chips, offering more autonomy and control.
In June, Apple said that it would take two years to transition the entire Mac range over to M1 chips, and today it made the first steps with the launch of a new MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini, all of which come with the new M1 chips.
Apple says that the chip “transforms the Mac experience,” offering 3.5 times faster CPU, 6 times faster GPU, and battery life up to twice as long as before, making the Mac the number one choice.
The company also confirmed that macOS Big Sur would be available on November 12.
Speaking of the new Macs at the keynote, Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, said: “The introduction of three new Macs featuring Apple’s breakthrough M1 chip represents a bold change that was years in the making, and marks a truly historic day for the Mac and for Apple.”
“M1 is by far the most powerful chip we’ve ever created, and combined with Big Sur, delivers mind-blowing performance, extraordinary battery life, and access to more software and apps than ever before.
“We can’t wait for our customers to experience this new generation of Mac, and we have no doubt it will help them continue to change the world.”
