Apple Registers Auto-Related Domains, Hinting at Car Project

Apple has registered three top-level domain names – apple.car, apple.cars and apple.auto – which could be linked to the corporation’s already heavily-rumored electric car project.

The registrations for these domains have been brought to light by MacRumors, which noticed them in online Whois records updated today. These records indicate that the domains were registered last month, but currently remain inactive.

It’s possible that Apple actually intends to use these domains to further promote its existing, above-pictured CarPlay feature, through which optimized versions of iPhone apps including Phone, Messages, Maps and Music can be displayed on in-car screens and used through Siri voice commands.

However, the abundant rumors that Apple is in fact working on an electric car are bound to be fueled even further by the revelations of these new domains. CEO Tim Cook has resisted either confirming or denying the authenticity of the rumors when repeatedly pressed on the subject in the past.
