Apple has released the latest version of its macOS operating system around the world.
The company had previously promised Catalina would “arrive in October,” but didn’t confirm a specific date – an unusual move for Apple who usually drops macOS a week after iOS.
The update comes after months of beta testing and refinements and can be downloaded for free from the Mac App Store or by heading to System Preferences and Software Update.
macOS Catalina introduces a bunch of new features that take the Mac to the next level, including the controversial removal of iTunes in favor of three dedicated apps – Music, Podcasts, and TV – bringing the software in line with iOS and preparing Apple for the launch of Apple TV+ on November 1, which will be accessible from the Mac as well as iOS.
iOS device management has also changed, with users now able to manage their iPhones, iPads and iPods from Finder. What’s more, users can access their Apple ID through a new user interface under System Preferences, offering more functionality and control than ever.
There are a tonne of other changes including SideCar – the ability to use an iPad as a second display on the Mac – and the ability to use Apple Watch to approve security prompts.
Apple also introduced the Find My app to the Mac, allowing users to find their iPhone, iPad, MacBook, and other devices even when they’re offline as part of new beacon technology.
Screen Time has also arrived on the Mac, whilst Project Catalyst will bring hundreds of apps designed for iPadOS to the Mac for the first time, potentially starting a Mac App Store revolution.

Photos has been given a new look alongside Reminders and Notes, whilst security has been increased with a new Gatekeeper setting which checks apps for known security issues before they launch.
Apple Arcade also comes to macOS Catalina, offering users the ability to play more than 100 games for just $4.99 – games that are cross-compatible with iOS and tvOS.
