Apple has reportedly scrapped a plan to launch a budget plastic iPad.
Last week, the company announced a new entry-level iPad with an all-screen design and stunning new colourways, but according to one report, the entry-level model could have looked very different. Apple was reportedly planning to launch an iPad with a plastic body and keyboard in the box for less than $500 but changed its mind.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman revealed that Apple was considering the new cheap iPad, which would have included a keyboard in the box for the first time, and it would have been sold for less than $500 in the United States. The idea was “abandoned”, according to reports, but it was an attempt to “give Chromebooks a run for their money in schools,” so it could be that Apple resurrects the idea in the future.
We don’t know whether the plastic device would have been the new 10th-generation iPad or a separate product, such as an iPad SE, but it’s an interesting concept nonetheless. Apple upgraded the iPad last week with an A14 Bionic chip, an all-screen design, and iPadOS, but it doesn’t support the new Apple Pencil.
