Apple will reportedly unveil two low-cost iPhones this year.

A new report from DigiTimes has suggested that Apple will kick off 2020 by launching the first of its new low-cost smartphones, rumored to be called the iPhone 9, and then drop a second low-cost model later in the year akin to the AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro release.

Their source, which comes from an Apple supply chain in Taiwan, suggests that Apple “is likely to add yet another LCD-based model to its iPhone lineup for 2020.

“This new member will be an upgraded version of the widely speculated ‌iPhone‌ SE2 featuring a 5.5- or 6.1-inch LCD display and available at the end of 2020 or in earlier 2021.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a new low-cost iPhone.

Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reported previously that Apple will release at least five new iPhones in 2020 – a cheaper iPhone 9 before the summer, and then successors to the iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max, with a second iPhone 12 to appease consumers looking for a larger display.

What’s particularly interesting to note is that some sources in Apple’s supply chains have said the company has issued a roadmap containing six iPhones for 2020, with Apple reportedly set to release OLED and LCD devices in 2020, suggesting two iPhone 9 models.

Apple will model the new iPhone 9 – also known as the iPhone SE 2 – on the popular iPhone 8 body, with a 4.7-inch screen, bezels, and Touch ID.

Where the new model will differ from the iPhone 8, however, is in its specs – it’s expected to come with an A13 chip, 3GB of RAM, and improved internals that will make the model powerful when gaming via Apple Arcade.

The latest rumors hint that Apple will follow the new iPhone 9 with a Plus model, larger in size, later in the year, or in early 2021. Whether this happens remains to be seen.
